The move from engineer to manager isn’t a bigger version of the same job. It’s a quiet rewrite of the very habits that made you good at the last one.
After enough years living in the code — watching a few systems grow from a humble first commit into something sprawling — the step from Software Engineer to Technical Manager turns out to be a road full of breaking changes. It isn’t simply a new title or a wider scope. It’s the slow, deliberate work of re-architecting the core habits and instincts that made you successful in the role before.
When you stop spending most of the day with your face in the IDE and start stepping back to see the whole picture — the architecture, the people, the process — a few things come into focus that are genuinely surprising, even contradictory to what you used to believe. Here are three of them.
