Symptoms
- Constantly reading new books/articles without applying insights
- Feeling knowledgeable but unable to demonstrate competence
- Collecting information as a form of productive procrastination
- Mistaking recognition for understanding
Why it happens
- Information feels like progress (dopamine from novelty)
- Action requires vulnerability and risk of failure
- Knowledge hoarding feels safer than practice
- Modern information abundance makes consumption endless
Breaking the trap
- Set implementation intentions before consuming content
- Practice "just-in-time" learning vs "just-in-case" learning
- Create friction for consumption, remove friction for practice
- Track actions taken, not information consumed
